Then I turned 21 and I’m like such a fucking loser. I loved going to parties, dancing with my friends and being a teenager. You’re both complete social dynamos.īella: I think when I was 17, and for 2 years after, I definitely had a lot of fun. Gigi came to the launch of our December issue last year and was the life and soul. Okay, but let’s not forget that the Hadids have a reputation for being fireworks at a party as well. I’m so grateful for to be able to have a platform. It’s about people being respectful and having a great work ethic, and standing up for what they believe in. It’s not about a pretty face or about how many covers you get. They’re such amazing people and whenever I’m having a hard time they’re always there.ĭoes it make you extra-mindful about how you’re perceived? That you need to operate as a role model?īella: Completely, it’s the biggest part about all this. I end up just going outside and, when I used to smoke, having a cigarette with them, just sitting and talking. It makes me laugh because I end up having crazy relationships with a lot of them, especially the ones that stand outside for hours. It’s so weird to say that they’re my fans. I know you get tired of the endless comparisons, but you have a very enthusiastic fan base don’t you?īella: Totally. I mean you’ve met her – she’s perfect! I’m just a child. You get on really well with Zayn too, don’t you?īella: Yeah absolutely – and I can always count on her. I always like to put in a little bit more effort just so we can see each other and have a moment. Like two nights ago I slept at Gigi’s house and waited till she got home to open the door for her at 6:30am. It’s so fucking awesome! Last year I was travelling a lot to the point where I was going completely insane, but I always knew that I could come back and have my sister and my mum there for me. I’m so proud doing this for the new British Vogue, and with Gigi. But over the years I’ve really had to teach myself. Everybody has a couple of years to get into it, but I had to really have my A-game from the beginning. People wanted me to be perfect at my first shoot.
What’s it been like to be the younger sister coming up behind Gigi?īella: At first, I was always really nervous. I try to just accept that I can’t have control over everyone’s opinion and I hope that when people meet me in real life they can have their own opinions and experience with me. I can’t take on the bad energy that people try to put on me at times. If they don’t then they’re wasting their energy on coming up with all this fake shit so that’s. But I do what feels true to me and I try to do it with integrity and all I can hope is that people would see it’s real. And then if I don’t do enough then they’re like, ‘They’re not really together,’ so it’s kind of always a battle. If I post what I think would be normal to post with your boyfriend then the comments are: ‘It’s extra’, ‘it’s forced’, ‘It’s fake’. How does one go about it in the social media age? You seem to manage a high-profile relationship with a bit of class and discretion. I won’t sign contracts anymore that say you have to post pictures that brands tell you to post. I don’t take captions that clients have sent me and copy and paste it. I always have tried to remain as true as I can to how I started. It was interesting because we were named the social media models, but that started to grow and feel more forced by the industry, I felt like I backed away from it.
To see your sister when you look across the room is just amazing, it’s something that is very rare.ĭo you feel like you’ve finally transcended the "social media model" tag? She’s definitely stolen more out of my closet than me out of hers. You know, now she sleeps at my apartment during the week and she can wear whatever she wants. I think the most we ever fought was like in middle school if she would steal my clothes out of my closet. That’s why I connect with her as an adult. We’re both creative, we love riding horses, we love being outdoors and we're spiritual - we have the same values of kindness and passion. We’re different, but we’re also the same in a lot of ways. Bella definitely was the more rebellious. She makes me so proud and I would do anything for her. She’s one of the only people that I’ll get aggressive for… Sorry! I didn’t mean to do this. All I do my entire life – the purpose – is just to watch over Bella. Gigi: I was always flipping trash cans or something, so I could stand up and get up high enough to look into her crib and check on her. You and Bella have always been especially close, haven’t you?
